
“Catch-a-Valentine Cake” Recipe
In this traditional Valentine’s Day recipe from the 1950s, as the boom of Valentine’s Day cards made its way through the U.S., A&P published a cake recipe called the Catch-a-Valentine Cake. Ingredients
- ½ cup shortening
- 2 ½ cups sifted cake flour
- 3 ½ tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 ¼ cups sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. almond extract
- 1 cup milk
- 3 egg whites, unbeaten
- Red food coloring
- Buttercream frosting
- Decorative hearts, if desired
Instructions
- Measure shortening in the bowl. Sift dry ingredients together, then add to the bowl with shortening. Add extracts to the milk. Add ¾ cup liquid to the bowl. Beat 1 minute. (Count at least 150 strokes per minute). Add remaining milk and egg whites. Beat 2 minutes. Pour ½ the batter into a small bowl. Stir in a few drops of red vegetable coloring. Alternate spoonfuls of each batter into 2 greased and floured deep 8-inch pans. Bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Frost with cream butter frosting, colored pink if desired. Decorate with candy hearts.
